From May 13th to May 17th, Pantelleria will host the Clean Energy for EU Islands Forum 2024, an annual event organised by the Clean Energy for EU Islands Secretariat, with the support of the MOREnergy Lab at the Polytechnic University of Turin, the Municipality of Pantelleria, and the National Park “Isola di Pantelleria”. The forum will take place on May 14th and 15th at the Mursia Hotel.
The activities will mainly be held in person, with the option to participate in some sessions online, and will be aimed at the local community of Pantelleria and representatives from all European island communities interested in supporting their islands in an energy transition journey. The two days will provide a great opportunity to discuss the theme of energy transition and resilience of European islands.
Additionally, three thematic workshops are scheduled at the Kohoutek Club in Tracino on May 13th, 16th, and 17th. Each workshop will delve into specific aspects of energy transition and offer opportunities for sharing and debate.
Pantelleria is one of WIMBY project’s pilot sites, making our participation in this event crucial to foster community engagement and grasp local sentiments regarding wind energy. Our goal is to collaborate closely with residents to gather insights and promote cooperation. Given that social acceptance and participation are fundamental principles of WIMBY research, active engagement with the community is imperative. Through interaction and involvement with the community, our aim is to prioritise their needs and address any misconceptions surrounding the NIMBY (Not In My BackYard) effect.
For more information, here you can find the agenda of the event. In particular, WIMBY will participate:
- From 9:30 to 9:50, MOREnergy Lab of the Polytechnic University of Turin will present a session named “Interactive session: impacts of wind energy on environment and society”, where they will also present WIMBY.
- In the afternoon, there will be two sessions hosted by BOKU University, titled “Game session – Immersive 3D virtual reality for wind farms”. During this workshop, they will interact with participants in an interactive virtual reality game for a participatory renewable energy planning in Pantelleria. Our partners, Thomas S., Christian M. and Michaela B. from BUKU will be supported by Rebecca H. and Sophie B. from Deep Blue and by Claudio Moscoloni and Giuseppe Giorgi from POLITO. The workshops will be both in Italian for the local community and in english for the international Forum audience.
For those unable to attend in person, don’t worry! Parts of the forum will be livestreamed on both days, May 14th and 15th, starting at 09:30 CEST. The livestream will be available on the event’s webpage shortly before the event begins. This offers a fantastic opportunity for individuals to tune in from anywhere in the world and engage with the discussions and presentations happening at the forum.
Within each workshop, moments of sharing and debate are planned to bring together and enhance the experiences of each island, especially those participating in the “30 for 2030” pathway. This initiative involves 30 islands and island groups across 10 EU countries, committed to achieving full energy independence by 2030. These islands vary in size and progress, from those just starting their energy transition plans to more advanced ones seeking support for the final stages. Under the initiative, these islands will determine their pathway to climate neutrality and receive comprehensive assistance to achieve their transition goals. More information on the participating islands can be found here.
We look forward to welcoming participants to the Clean energy for EU islands forum 2024, whether in person or virtually. We hope the event provides valuable insights and opportunities for collaboration.
